THE BURTOLOSO RESEARCH GROUP
SYNTHETIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Antonio Burtoloso was born in Petrópolis (RJ), Brazil, in 1976. He completed his B.Sc. in chemistry in 2001 and his M.Sc. in 2002 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro under the guidance of Prof. L. C. de Sequeira. In 2002 he moved to Campinas-SP,Brazil, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree under the supervision of Prof. C. R. D. Correia at the State University of Campinas. His Ph.D. work was based on the investigation of new methodologies for the stereoselective synthesis of azetidines and azetidine alkaloids. After finishing his Ph.D., he went to San Diego-CA-USA for post-doctoral studies under the guidance of Prof. K. C. Nicolaou at The Scripps Research Institute (total synthesis of maitotoxin).
In 2008, after leaving the Nicolaou group, he joined the faculty staff of the Chemistry Institute of the University of São Paulo (São Carlos Campus) as an assistant professor. In 2015 he was appointed Associate Professor from the same institute.
His interests include methodological studies in insertion reactions with metal carbenes, development of new multifunctional reagents for the total synthesis of piperidine, indolizidine and quinolizidine alkaloids, synthesis of natural products with potent activity against tropical diseases, biomass chemistry.
